You have diligently fed and cared for your compost or worm bin, and it has rewarded you with more compost than your lawn and plants can use, well there’s good news, there’s a way for you to put that surplus compost to good use and make some extra cash in the process, sell it!

By selling your surplus compost to other local gardeners and houseplant lovers, you are not only making some extra cash, but you are further helping the environment by providing people a safe, natural fertilizer.

Here are some things you can to get your compost business started.

1.

Now that you have a surplus of compost, you need to get the word out. The easiest way to do that is by using your Facebook page, joining related gardening Facebook Groups, and even running some local Google Ads.

Even apartment composters that find themselves with some surplus compost can make a little extra cash. Just put up a sign in a common area at your apartment complex where other tenants will see it. Many of your neighbors have container gardens and houseplants that will benefit from your compost.

2.

You’ll want to weigh your compost and come up with your packaging. Preferably, your packaging will set you apart from competitors.

You may choose, instead, to have buyers bring their own containers.

To get an idea on how much to charge for a certain amount of your compost, take a look in the garden center of any store and check out what they are charging for a variety of bag sizes of compost.

3.

If your compost starts selling well, you might consider setting up another bin to increase the amount you will have available.

If you don’t have a worm composting bin, set one up, so you can offer both types of compost to your customers. Compost containing worm castings is very popular due to the additional nutritional benefits it provides.

Remember, you’re not limited to only selling your compost. You can always sell your excess worms as well. People can start their own worm bins, put into their gardens, for fishing or animal food.

If you ever find you are having trouble getting enough recyclable materials to maintain your compost bins, ask your neighbors if they could keep their recyclables (toilet paper/paper towel rolls, newspapers and cardboard boxes) for you to use.

Offer them a container of compost for their efforts. This is actually a good way to get more people to start recycling.

You’re doing a great thing by having your compost or worm bins.

You’re helping reduce the amount of trash going to landfills and helping improve the environment.

Good work!

And now get out there and spread the word about the benefits of compost and also make yourself some extra cash.
